Our focus for the month during Family Worship Night is from John 6 when Jesus fed the 5000. The memory verse is: "I am the bread of life." (John 6: 35)
I love that it was a child who was willing to share his lunch before knowing what the outcome would be. (I guess this seems more amazing now that I'm reminding people to share on a daily basis...) And I love that Jesus not only met their need, but supplied more than enough.
We read the story and then played an imaginary picnic game. We sat on the floor and passed around a picnic basket and each person took turns naming something they would want to eat at a picnic. After we had fried chicken, cookies, ice cream and lots of other goodies, I asked Charlie, "Do you think this is enough food for us to eat on a picnic?... At Jesus' picnic there were so many more people and they only had 5 loaves of bread and 2 fish. Was that enough to feed all those people?" We ended the night by playing this go fish game:
