2010 Census

As I filled out the Census this year, I was taken aback {for a second} when I had to choose a biological or adoptive box for my boys. (Probably because I completely forget that Charlie is adopted sometimes until I have to check a box...) I wasn't offended by having to mark the box. In fact, we celebrate his adoption and in no way are ashamed by it. But, I've heard some controversy over the fact that the Census requires the separation of bio/adopted children and some adoptive parents believe it's yet another way their kids are 'othered'. This post on growninmyheart.com explains the differing reactions to the Census. I'm actually glad the government is including the numbers of adoption in their research. I hope the numbers are increasing by thousands each year and that we as adoptive families are making a statement that we are pro-adoption and we are done with over-looking children in long-term foster care who need a permanent placement with a forever family and children who are institutionalized in orphanages around the world who deserve a family. How 'bout them numbers, Census 2010?
