impromptu birthday celebration

Today is Chris' birthday. He's joined me in being 30.
(*happy birthday, babe!*)
We were up before him this morning and wanted something fun for him when he woke up, so we came up with this impromptu sign and balloons.
(yes, those are water balloons. I guess they are the only kind we Hedrick's have around the house. It turned out to be an entertaining morning activity in the backyard, especially watching Ethan try to figure them out...)
Now, I'm contemplating my last-minute efforts and I'm thinking we should have a more solid birthday tradition around here.
I found this banner on etsy that I think is so cute and since it's fabric could be used again and again (as opposed to my green marker on computer paper sign...)
We have a special birthday plate, but I forget to use it.
So, I'm asking you blog readers:
Did you have any fun birthday traditions growing up?
Or do you something special to celebrate birthdays for your kids/husband now?

(*C- hopefully I will get some responses and next year will be less impromptu!)

We hang streamers from the girls doors during the night. We also have donuts (free Krispy Kreme: they'll even give them to you with your kid's birth certificate) for breakfast.
